Looks like this will be a banner year for banning texting while you are driving. Already this year there are twenty one states that are looking at proposals for statewide bans on texting while you are driving. Unfortunately as hard as this is to believe texting while people are driving is becoming quite a big safety issue for drivers. You would think that common sense would rule the day and people just would not think to type to someone while they were driving, you would think wouldn’t you?
I mean doesn’t that seem like common sense to you that you should not be taking your eyes off the road to be typing a message while you drive? I guess not since it was a major plot point in the last Will Smith movie, sorry to any of you that have not watched seven pounds yet. His character killed his wife and whole bunch of innocent people because he was texting while he was driving. I think it really speaks to the severity of the problem when the cell phone companies have voiced their opinions in stating that there should be a ban on texting while people are driving.
There are by the way twelve states that already have laws in the books banning driving and texting at the same time. So what’s the big deal why do people feel the need to put their lives and the lives everyone else on the road in danger for a text message? I think it all feeds into our insatiable hunger to be in touch and be in control of as much as possible. Honestly now I am showing my age here but I am pretty sure that people and the world for that matter functioned quite well before cell phones and text messaging.
Too bad there is not some way for the cell phone companies to figure out how to technologically have the cell phone shut down if it is travelling beyond a certain speed. I have another idea that maybe car companies could come up with a way that when the car turns on that it creates a wireless signal scrambler that renders the cell phone useless while the car is in drive? Would that be a pain for some people? I am sure it would be but you know what if it saves a few hundred lives a year than I would be OK with not being able to make a phone call or sending a text message while I was driving. If it’s that important than I will pull over, I’d say that would be a small price to pay to save some lives.

there is a key you can get that will jam your cell phone for 5 feet around the drivers seat. This has become a serious public health issue and several states are adopting similar legislation, here is more about it: http://www.newsy.com/videos/texting_and_driving_your_right_or_a_new_way_to_crash
