Mobile Web Reaching Critical Mass

Mobile phone technology is exploding this fall with mobile web games, gadgets and browsing upgrades. There are now an estimated 40 million people just in the US alone that are using their mobile devices to go online and do their surfing. That is a staggering amount of growth is a relatively short period of time. Telecommunication companies are really starting to hit their stride with the types of technologies they are offering to the general consumer.

This time of year in particular is when you will see all the new cell phone features to get a lot of press as the phone companies start to ramp up their offerings for the holiday season. The recent press conference held by Steve Jobs for the new iPods and was OK but it was the direction of his announcement that got most of the press. He emphasized the exploding mobile web market and the major impact that mobile gaming is having and will continue to have in the mobile market.

Consider that all the major telecom companies now have their 3G networks up and complete, except for TMobile( get moving!). Some companies are already working on their 4th generation networks to only push the speed limits of their mobile networks that much more. The speed of the 3G networks has been the big shot in the arm that the mobile web needed. Now that we have the speed the gadgets, games and extra features are flooding the market.

Obviously the iPhone has changed the way the telecom game is being played. As all companies have scrambled to release their own touch screen technologies with rich Internet browsing capabilities. The mobile phone market is dominated now by smart phones, iPhones and blackberry’s all giving you online capabilities that rival sitting in front of your computer at home.

What do you think of the mobile web explosion? Do you find that you really have a use for the Internet on your phone or is it simply an added fun factor to your cell phone? I see the usefulness for work related items but seriously how many of us use the mobi for strictly business? Do I really need to be online 24/7? Please share your opinions and thanks for reading.
