How many of us have either purchased or know someone that has recently purchased one of the new smart phones? Smart phones have arrived in a big way thanks to the success of the iPhone. This past holiday season the smart phone market was the saving grace for the mobile phone makers. If it was anything other than a smart phone the sales numbers for regular cell phones were down across the board.
I would take that as a sure sign that we may be seeing the end of the basic cell phone. Why would this be the end of the basic cell phone? The main reason as I see it is that people love to have the latest must have gadget and the smart phones are the must have item. Again thanks to the brilliance of the iPhone getting a smart phone seems to be on top of everyone’s must have list.
Even with global economies in a melt down there was no slow down in sales for the smart phone market. There will be no foreseeable slow down in the future either as more and more wireless phone companies keep adding smart phone choices to their phone library. With phones like the iPhone, Android, Palm and Blackberry and more on the way. Clearly there is a national shift in phone service of choice and everyone seems to be going for the smart phones.
Don’t expect the wireless companies to fight this shift, if anything they are more than happy to have more customers jump on the smart phone band wagon. Why would the phone companies be so keen to move the bulk of their business to smart phones? Data service fees! The more people using smart phones means more people using their data services which means an increase in funds coming in and what company doesn’t want that.
