The Day Motorola Changed The Future

Today is one of those days that ended up changing the future which is now 25 years of history. Thanks to team of engineers at Motorola who a quarter of a century ago completed technological journey that started with a single cellular phone call from the president of Ameritech Mobile Communications in Chicago to the grandson of Alexander Graham Bell in Germany using the first portable cellular phone, the Motorola’s DynaTAC 8000X.

Yes it’s true today is the 25th birthday of the first commercially made mobile phone call. Stop and think about what this single invention has done for the world and the way we communicate. At this point it’s hard for anyone to imagine a time when we had to make phone calls from a wired phone, even for those of us that are old enough to remember.

Remember phone booths or being a teenager and getting that 50ft. phone cord just so you could talk to your friends in the other room away from your parents. Wow that just made me feel old because I do remember that!

It took Motorola over 10 years to perfect the communication network that would be able to handle a high volume of cell phone calls with very little drops in service. Eventually though after 10 years of trial and error and over $100 million dollars Motorola completed a stable network for the first commercially available cell phone, which hit the market in 1984 and never looked back.

The DynaTAC 8000X from Motorola:

That’s a picture of the first phone which measured 13inches in length by comparison to today’s phone that average somewhere around 3 to 5 inches and a fraction of the weight as well. Yes mobile phone communications have come a long way in the last 25 years. With iPhones, Androids and Blackberrys dominating the marketplace now, we should all collectively raise our fancy cell phones and thank Motorola for what they gave to the world so long ago.
